Architecture, as a discipline that shapes the physical environment and influences human experience, has always been interested in the potential to expand the possibilities of design and expression. Surrealism in architecture can be understood as a creative approach that uses the techniques and principles of surrealism to produce architectural forms, spaces and images that defy the norms and expectations of the real world, as a way of questioning, subverting and transforming the established codes and conventions, creating new meanings and experiences for the users and viewers.
One of the techniques and principles of surrealism that can be applied to architecture includes dislocation: the displacement and distortion of familiar and recognizable elements, such as objects, spaces, or perspectives, to create a sense of estrangement and confusion. Dislocation disrupts the normal perception and understanding of the elements, and creates a sense of ambiguity and mystery.
